Walk-ins welcome · Same day service · Board-level repairs most shops can’t do

Coffee on your MacBook. Phone in a puddle. Tablet caught in the rain. Your first reaction is to assume the device is destroyed, but water damage repair in Kansas City is far more successful than most people realize. At Tech Guardian, we recover devices that other repair shops have written off as dead.

How Water Damage Actually Destroys Electronics

When liquid contacts your electronics, it doesn’t instantly destroy everything. Understanding the timeline helps explain why acting fast matters so much. In the first few seconds, water bridges circuits and causes short circuits, but the device’s safety features often shut power down automatically. The damage at this stage is usually localized to where the water entered.

Within hours, corrosion begins attacking metal traces on the circuit board. Mineral deposits build up, particularly with tap water, and capacitors start to fail. After several days, widespread corrosion spreads across the board, components fail one after another, and data becomes increasingly difficult to recover.

Water Damage Recovery Rates by Timeline

The corrosion clock is real, and every hour counts. Devices brought to us the same day as water exposure have roughly an 80 percent recovery rate. The next day, that drops to about 65 percent. By three or more days, we’re looking at around 40 percent. After a week, recovery rates fall to approximately 20 percent. The message is clear: if your device gets wet, call us immediately at (816) 583-0100.

What Most Repair Shops Get Wrong About Water Damage

Chain repair stores typically give you one of two responses: either “we can’t fix water damage” or “it’ll cost $300 to $500 and might not work.” Both answers stem from the same problem — they don’t have the capability to do board-level work. They can’t dry components properly, they can’t diagnose which specific parts failed, and they certainly can’t perform the micro soldering needed to replace damaged components.

Our process is fundamentally different. We power the device off immediately to prevent further damage, disassemble it carefully, inspect every component under a microscope, identify all corroded areas, clean and dry everything properly, replace failed components like capacitors and power circuits, and test thoroughly before returning your device. If the device can’t be saved, we recover your data directly from the storage drive.

Real Water Damage Recovery: iPhone Dropped in Pool

A customer brought in an iPhone 12 that had been fully submerged in a pool for about 30 seconds. They powered it off immediately, which was smart. When we opened it, we found water damage concentrated around the charging port area with corrosion on the power management circuit. The data storage was completely intact.

We disassembled the phone, ran it through ultrasonic cleaning, replaced the failed capacitors and power circuit components, and dried everything properly. When we powered it on, it worked. All photos, contacts, and messages were intact. Total cost was $250, compared to buying a new iPhone for over $1,000 and losing all data.

Real Water Damage Recovery: MacBook Coffee Spill

Another customer spilled a full cup of coffee directly on their MacBook keyboard. They powered it off immediately. Inside, we found liquid trapped between the keyboard and motherboard with corrosion on the power management circuit, but the SSD containing all their data was completely protected.

After careful disassembly, thorough motherboard cleaning, and replacement of the damaged power circuit components, the MacBook powered on normally with all data safe. Total cost was $350. A new MacBook would have cost $1,200 or more, plus the risk of losing irreplaceable files. For MacBook-specific issues, our MacBook logic board repair service handles these exact situations.

Data Recovery From Water-Damaged Devices

Here’s something most people don’t realize: your data is almost never lost in water damage situations. Storage drives — whether SSDs or HDDs — are typically housed in separate compartments from the areas most affected by liquid. We can remove the storage drive, connect it to a safe device, copy everything off, and restore it to either your repaired device or a new one.

Even if your phone or laptop is completely dead and can’t be revived, we can almost always save your photos, documents, contacts, and files. If you have a decade of memories on that device, data recovery alone makes the repair visit worthwhile.

What to Do (and Not Do) After Water Damage

If your device gets wet, do not leave it powered on — this spreads damage rapidly. Do not try to dry it with heat, as that literally cooks the components. Do not put it in rice, which is a myth that actually traps moisture and introduces dust. Do not wait days before getting help, because corrosion spreads relentlessly. And do not attempt the repair yourself, as you’ll almost certainly make things worse.

Instead, power it off immediately, call us right away at (816) 583-0100, bring it in wet without trying to dry it, and let us handle the recovery process professionally.

Get Your Water-Damaged Device Recovered

Water damage doesn’t automatically mean your device is dead. With fast action and the right expertise, most water-damaged electronics can be saved. Tech Guardian has the microscopes, ultrasonic cleaning equipment, and micro soldering capability to recover devices that other shops refuse.

In addition to water damage recovery, we offer iPhone screen repair and MacBook logic board repair at affordable prices.
